The End of Reconstruction
On the timeline · around 1877 ·
What happened
The disputed 1876 presidential election was resolved by the Compromise of 1877: Democrats accepted Republican Rutherford B. Hayes as president, and in return the last federal troops were withdrawn from the South, ending Reconstruction.
Why it matters
The withdrawal abandoned Black Southerners to the rise of white-supremacist rule, disenfranchisement, and segregation. The promise of the Reconstruction Amendments would go largely unfulfilled for nearly a century.
