What happened

On Crete, unfortified palace complexes at Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros grew into the first advanced civilization on European soil, their walls covered in frescoes of bull-leapers, dolphins, and processions, their scribes keeping accounts in an undeciphered script called Linear A. The palaces had no defensive walls at all, an absence almost unheard of elsewhere in the Bronze Age Mediterranean, though weapons and guardhouses found along Minoan roads show peace was never guaranteed. Around 1450 BCE, most of the palaces were destroyed by fire, earthquake, or invasion within a few decades of each other; only Knossos survived, before it too fell roughly a century later.

Why it matters

Later Greeks never really knew who the Minoans were. What survived instead was legend: a labyrinth beneath a palace, a bull-headed monster, a king named Minos. The double-axe carvings and bull imagery found throughout Knossos are almost certainly what fed the myth of the Minotaur, meaning the story most people know today is Bronze Age Crete's real afterlife.

How we know

The civilization was unknown to modern scholars until the archaeologist Arthur Evans excavated Knossos between 1900 and 1905 CE, after noticing that native Cretans still wore ancient carved seal stones as good-luck charms. Evans named the entire civilization Minoan after the legendary king, and it was his excavation, not any surviving text, that first proved Bronze Age Crete had been real.
