What happened
Archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad led excavations at L'Anse aux Meadows, on the northern tip of Newfoundland, between 1961 and 1968, uncovering eight turf-walled buildings including large halls, smaller huts, and workshops on a terrace above Epaves Bay. The buildings' construction technique matched known Norse building styles from Greenland and Iceland rather than any Indigenous North American tradition, and the site included a forge for iron-working and evidence consistent with boat repair, suggesting a base for exploring further south rather than a permanent farming colony. Radiocarbon dating and analysis of wood-cutting tool marks place the occupation within a few decades of the year 1000, and the site was likely used for less than a decade before being abandoned.
Why it matters
This is the only site in North America proven, rather than merely claimed, to have been built by Norse settlers, which is why UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1978. It anchors the otherwise saga-only story of Vinland to a specific, dated, physically verifiable location, giving the Viking Age its clearest instance where archaeology and literary tradition point to the same place.
How we know
Anne Stine Ingstad's excavation reports, later analysis by Parks Canada archaeologists, and UNESCO's World Heritage documentation together establish the site's Norse origin, construction methods, and approximate dates.
