What happened
Oleg, who took over leadership of the Rus at Novgorod after Rurik's death, led a campaign south along the river network and arrived at Kiev, where Rurik's former lieutenants Askold and Dir had built up wealth through raiding. Oleg lured the two men out of the city under false pretenses and had them killed, then took Kiev for himself around 882 and moved the Rus center of power there from Novgorod. From Kiev, Oleg spent his reign negotiating and fighting his way to control over the river trade routes, including a treaty with Constantinople, and filled the city's treasury.
Why it matters
Moving the capital to Kiev placed the Rus state on the Dnieper river route straight to the Black Sea and Constantinople, the richest market a Scandinavian trading network could reach. Kievan Rus, the state this founded, became the dominant power in the region for the next three centuries.
How we know
The Russian Primary Chronicle narrates Oleg's deception of Askold and Dir and his subsequent treaties with Constantinople, though as a 12th-century compilation it mixes court record with legend, including a famous, likely embellished, prophecy about Oleg's death.
