What happened
In a 2024 interview, former Rockstar designer Ben Hinchliffe said the quiet part aloud about the studio's mysteries: some easter eggs are, in his words, just put in there to mess with people, to drive them a little bit crazy, while noting Rockstar's genuine appetite for elaborate trails for dedicated players. He was not on the mural, so the bottom of this iceberg is a confession about the game's mysteries in general from someone who helped build them.
Why it matters
Eleven years of hunting, and the deepest verified truth is that the game was designed to make you hunt. The mystery was the content.
How we know
GamesRadar covered Hinchliffe's remarks in November 2024. Honest limits, stated: he spoke about Rockstar's easter egg philosophy without claiming first-hand knowledge of the mural, so the mural itself remains officially unexplained.
